Brisbane for the Social Fun Seeker

Do you enjoy going on holiday with a group or making new friends while you’re away? Is the experience more valuable when you share it with friends or family? If you’re a social fun seeker on holiday, then Brisbane has a wealth of choices for you to enjoy. From accommodation to food venues to fun activities, all can be found in Brisbane.

First, it would be remiss of me not to start with the accommodation. Although I may be biased, Bridgewater Terraces is ideal as it provides comfortable, affordable accommodation in the prime holiday location of Kangaroo Point. With an outdoor pool, fitness centre, sauna and landscaped gardens, it’s almost not necessary to go anywhere else. However, though as lovely as Bridgewater Terraces is, it would be a shame to pass up on all the other options for fun in Brisbane. Centrally located, across the river from the Brisbane CBD, Bridgewater Terraces allows easy access to many unforgettable activities.

One of the best ways to view the beautiful Brisbane River is to take a cruise on the Kookaburra Queen, a paddle wheeler styled on the legendary paddle boats of the Mississippi River. The Showboat Cruises are available for lunch and dinner and feature a delicious meal and, onboard entertainment for you and your group. Cabaret-style shows featuring magic shows, live jazz and dance performances make for a fun and exciting trip.

Popular venues to experience the best of Brisbane’s comedy and culture include the Brisbane Powerhouse and the Paddington Tavern; you’re guaranteed to have some of the best fun in Brisbane at these venues. At the Powerhouse, a range of events such as stand-up comedians, theatre, music, comedy, dance, film, visual arts, festivals is available throughout the year. Combine this with good food for a night of fun and laughter. The Paddington Tavern features a karaoke night, trivia night and the Sit Down Comedy Club. If your singing skills and trivia knowledge haven’t already provided enough entertainment, then the comedy performances will have you rolling with laughter.

For an equally entertaining night but with the emphasis on spooky rather than comedy, a visit to St Helena Island is on my list of suggested fun activities in Brisbane. St Helena Island is the site of Queensland’s colonial maximum security prison. After a hearty meal, you will visit the ruins and the cemetery, where members of the St Helena Theatre Troupe will regale you with tales of those who never left the island. The evening concludes with a delicious dessert and a rousing sing-a-long.

Back in Brisbane, we can participate in another night of mystery by joining the Convict and Crime Walking Tour. This 3-kilometre stroll will take you past convict built landmarks and Brisbane’s former red light district while you listen to tales of opium dens, gambling parlours, sly-grog shops and murder. At the end of the 3-hour tour, enjoy a complimentary drink at a downtown Brisbane bar and exchange grisly tales with your new friends.

If you would like to sample some of the local nightlife, then the laneway pub crawl down Burnett Lane will reveal a surprising array of hidden treasures offering snacks, meals and drinks at Super Whatnot, Survey Co. Bar and Bistro and Brew. Alternatively, head back to the Eagle St Pier, where a choice of 16 venues, many of which are open to late, will give you a veritable smorgasbord of dining options. On Sundays, you can also enjoy the markets at the Pier, which feature quality hand-made arts and crafts, giftware, clothing and jewellery. While strolling around, looking for a bargain, you will be entertained by local street performers, making for a relaxing and enjoyable time out.
