Brisbane plays host to a number of major events this month of May. From film festivals to live entertainment and dance shows, our city has something to offer to everyone this month.

If you’re heading to Brisbane, then you certainly have a lot to look forward to. Continue reading this post as I list 5 of the biggest events to hit our city this month. In fact, there is so much going on across Brisbane this month, that you found it hard to narrow this list down to just 5. So, listen up!

1. Spanish Film Festival

Get a taste of the true Spanish culture at the Spanish Film Festival. This is the 20th edition of the festival and it will showcase some of the finest Spanish films of recent times. From daring romance to complex comedies and critically acclaimed work, you’ll get to witness it all at this festival.

The Spanish Film Festival runs till Sunday, May 14 at Palace Cinemas in Fortitude Valley.

This May, Brisbane hosts some of the best independent American films at the American Essentials Film Festival 2017. The festival will showcase films of all types, ranging from comedy and thrillers to documentaries, visual art and body gore. With 20 films making their Australian premiere at this event, there’s certainly something in store for everyone.

The American Essential Film Festival 2017 runs from Wednesday, May 17 to Sunday, May 28 at Palace Centro in Fortitude Valley. 

3. Behind Closed Doors

If you’re a fan of theatre and dance, then you mustn’t miss Behind Closed Doors. This show is a beautiful take on the fragility, playfulness and darkness of human nature. The dance will be accompanied by seductive live jazz music and promises to be a treat for everyone.

Behind Closed Doors runs from Friday, May 19 to Saturday, May 27 at the QPAC in South Bank. Tickets are priced between $59-$69.

4. The Gambaro Moët & Chandon Gala Ball

Get ready for an evening of live music, dance and thrilling entertainment at The Gambaro Moët & Chandon Gala Ball. This event of champagne, glamour and gold is a highlight on Brisbane’s social calendar. There’s also Gambaro’s great steak, seafood and an oyster buffet to look forward – yummo!

The Gambaro Moët & Chandon Gala Ball is on Saturday, May 20 from 7:00pm-11:30pm at the Gambaro Hotel Function Centre in Petrie Terrace. A ticket to this event will cost you $250.

5. West End Film Festival

Finally, the 9th edition of the West End Film Festival is also being held in Brisbane this May. This festival is a competition of short films, animations and music videos made by local Australian filmmakers. This festival will proudly connect independent filmmaking culture with people.

The West End Film Festival runs from Saturday, May 27 to Sunday, May 28 from 6:00pm onwards at the Boundary Street Markets in West End.
