I’ve been providing cheap accommodation in Brisbane to tourists for several years now. While there are times when bookings overflow, there are also times when the demand for accommodation slows down and the year ending March 2014 was exactly like that.
Why were the bookings down? Does that mean that tourists find Brisbane less interesting? Well, the reason why the numbers of visitors dropped last year is not because Brisbane was no longer attractive to travellers. In fact, holiday visitors who were here to relax and explore our culture marginally increased by +0.5% to 1,411,000. On the other hand, the number of people who were here for the purpose of visiting their friends and family members was unchanged at 2,200,000. The only one that was in the negative territory was the business travel, which dropped by -2.5% to 1,083,000.
The drop was attributed to the -14% decrease in the intrastate market and -19% decline in the interstate segment largely out of New South Wales. Tourism Queensland has revealed that the phase-out of the construction activity in the region was the reason to blame for the decline in numbers.
Since the number of business travellers dropped by -2.5%, the demand for accommodation in Brisbane followed suit. Occupied rooms per night dropped -2.8% to 3,571,666. Room occupancy rates were also down after it dropped – 2.7% to 74.3%. Because of this, accommodation providers revenue dropped -2.7% to just $640 million.
What does it mean to you?
As less people are now booking accommodation in Brisbane, hotels owners and serviced apartment providers such as myself, are forced to make our rates more attractive to potential customers to ensure that all our units are booked. Well, we’d rather offer cheap accommodation in Brisbane than to see our rooms go empty, right? While some offer promotions such as stay for two days and get the third night for free, others are slashing their prices from 10% all the way to 50%. If you have always dreamed of going to Brisbane but just don’t have enough money to do so, now is the perfect time to go. Take advantage of cheap accommodation in Brisbane and save enormous money that you can use to check out more attractions, to sample more Australian and international dishes, and of course, to buy more for your shopping spree.
Okay, so how much can I save?
As mentioned, many accommodation providers are offer discounts and other promotions to increase their bookings. Depending on the property and its location, you can expect to find cheap accommodation in Brisbane with a 10% to 50% discount.
For hotels and other accommodation in Brisbane CBD and South Bank, the most you can expect to save is 10%-15%. Why? This is because these locations are the top picks of most travellers and hotels here are booked out first. If you’re thinking about booking accommodation in a three star hotel in either of these destinations, the average rate per night is around $300, this may drop for longer stays. Now, let say that they offer 10% discount, this means that you’ll pay an average of $270 per night.
If that’s still a lot for you, I suggest you consider looking for cheap accommodation in Brisbane outside of the CBD and South Bank.
If you’re travelling with your family or a group of friends, please consider our serviced apartment at Kangaroo Point. Why Kangaroo Point? Well it’s just 1 kilometre from the CBD yet our prices are unbelievably cheap. A 1 bedroom apartment that can sleep up to three people is less than $150 per night and that doesn’t include any discounts that may be available.
If you compare our 1 bedroom apartments to its counterpart in CBD, you’ll most likely have to spend around $500 to receive a serviced apartment complete with a fully equipped kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious living areas, and a range of amenities.
Conclusion:
As the tourism industry has slowed down in the year ending March 2014, accommodation prices have become a lot cheaper. So, if you’ve been looking to visit Brisbane, now is the perfect time to do so.
For cheap accommodation in Brisbane, consider Bridgewater Terraces located at Kangaroo Point. As mentioned, we are just 1 kilometre from the CBD and travel time on ferry is just 7 minutes.
